The trade is facing increasing pressure from anti-wildlife trade groups to restrict species that are in trade, and in particular to ban the trade in wildlife. Therefore it’s very important that all aspects of the industry ensure their supply of livestock are sourced sustainably and to high welfare standards.
To help businesses in their livestock selection OATA has developed a free online Sustainable Sourcing Tool. This is a industry-led species selection tool is designed for importers, wholesalers and retailers (not fishkeepers) to demonstrate responsible, sustainable trade and proactive self-regulation.
The tool guides users through questions on supply chains, animal welfare, biosecurity and conservation. The questions ask about the species, suppliers being used, facilities and customer base. At the end, the user receives onscreen (and emailed) tailored advice, resources and recommendations to help with decision-making. It will help businesses assess potential risks and concerns before deciding whether to stock a species. While the final decision remains with the user, species subject to harmful practices opposed by OATA are not recommended until those issues are addressed.
Pick a fish species you’re interested in and make a start!
We would also encourage users to give us feedback on how the tool worked for you. Please do email comments and questions to info@ornamentalfish.org
Our plan is to add further species in the future, such as plants, corals and invertebrates.
