The European Union is currently considering a ban or restrictions on imports of Caudata i.e. newts & salamanders species, because of the biosecurity risk posed by BSal.
We understand that because of the biosecurity risk posed by BSal the EU plans to introduce new controls on the import of salamanders and newts before the end of the year.
We understand this could include new certification requirements at export and import, minimum consignment sizes, and potentially some form of quarantine procedures. We are trying to get more information from the authorities so we can prepare guidance for businesses. Once we know more we’ll inform members and put information on our website and social media.
We are also still looking for reliable data on the number and value of imports to the UK. If your business handles these species it will really help us if you can give us some assistance on numbers by filling in our quick four-question anonymous survey.
